Congratulations on your decision to upgrade your countertops—this is an exciting step, and we’re thrilled you’ve chosen World Stone as your fabricator. Our goal is to make the process smooth, professional, and satisfying from start to finish. To help ensure success, please review the following expectations carefully.

Client Responsibilities

To avoid delays, the following items must be completed before we can proceed:

  • Job Information Approval:
All job information sheets, including any revisions, must be signed and dated by the client.
Failure to sign and return required documentation will delay fabrication and void any tentative install dates.

  • Selections & Fixtures:
Final selections for cooktops, sinks, and faucets must be provided prior to scheduling your installation. These items must be on site at the time of measure/install to avoid return trip charges.

  • Cabinet Readiness:
Cabinets must be fully installed, level, and secured to the wall before the template appointment.
World Stone Inc. is not liable for countertops installed on cabinets or walls that are out of level or not straight.

Tip: Crooked walls can leave visible gaps behind countertops. Consider using a tile or alternate backsplash to address uneven surfaces.

Template & Measurement

  • During the field measure, our technician will use digital laser equipment to take precise measurements of your cabinets.

  • All surfaces must be cleared before the appointment.

  • If additional details are needed—overhangs, sink dimensions, seam locations, etc.—someone over the age of 18 must be present to review with our technician.

Incidental Damage Notice

Countertop installation is a construction process, and while we take every precaution, some minor incidental damage may occur.

Please note the following:

  • We recommend waiting to complete wall painting or wallpapering until after installation.

  • Scratches to walls, cabinetry, or floors are possible due to the size and weight of the material.

  • When installing large pieces between walls, seams may be required to minimize the risk of damage. If seams are declined, any damage caused during installation becomes the client’s responsibility.

  • If World Stone removes old countertops, we are not responsible for existing cabinet damage or the condition of the original countertop.

Plumbing & Sink Installation

  • We will mount undermount sinks to the countertops, but we do not perform any plumbing work, including:

    • Faucet installation

    • Disposal connections

    • Drain hook-ups

  • It is the client’s responsibility to:

    • Ensure all plumbing fits with the sink and backsplash configuration

    • Schedule a plumber for hookup no sooner than 24 hours after installation to allow adhesives to cure

Dust & Cleanup

  • Countertop installation creates residual dust, even with careful work.
You may want to cover adjacent spaces to contain dust in the work area.

  • Our team will leave the installation site in a broom-clean condition.

Final Note

We’re here to make this experience seamless and positive. Your attention to the above expectations helps us deliver the quality you deserve—and ensures your project stays on track.

  • World Stone offers high-quality countertops of quartz, granite, marble, and quartzite.

Quartz: engineered stone surfaces composed of natural quartz crystals, resins, polymers, and pigments. Renowned for their durability, they resist scratches, stains, and impacts, outperforming many natural stone options.

Granite: natural stone surfaces cut from large slabs of granite, a highly durable igneous rock formed deep within the Earth's crust. Renowned for their natural beauty and unique patterns, granite countertops bring a touch of elegance to kitchens and bathrooms.

Marble: exquisite natural stone surfaces crafted from metamorphic rock formed when limestone undergoes intense heat and pressure. Known for their timeless elegance and luxurious appearance, marble countertops add sophistication to any space. However, they are more susceptible to staining and scratching than other stone surfaces.

Quartzite: Quartzite, a tough metamorphic rock from sandstone, is perfect for countertops.

  • Natural stone, like granite and marble, is quarried from the earth. Engineered stone, such as quartz, is a composite material made from crushed stone and resin. Both have their unique advantages, so the choice depends on personal preferences.

  • Thicknesses range from 1 to 3 centimeters. Thicker countertops, such as 3 centimeters, are the most common, chosen for their robustness and more substantial appearance.

  • Stone countertops, particularly granite and quartz, are resistant to scratches under normal use. However, it's still best to use cutting boards and avoid dragging heavy or abrasive items across the surface.

  • The best way to clean a countertop is with warm water and soap!

  • While some stones are suitable for outdoor use, it's essential to choose durable, weather-resistant options like granite. Outdoor stone countertops may require additional maintenance to withstand the elements.

  • Yes, stone countertops can be customized to fit specific shapes and sizes. Discuss your design preferences and requirements with your World Stone representative to create a tailored solution for your space.

  • The sink reveal refers to the exposed edge of the countertop around the perimeter of an installed sink. It's a crucial detail in the installation process, and the size of the reveal can be customized based on design preferences.

Positive reveal: some of the top of the sink is visible.

Negative reveal: the countertop has some overhang over the sink.

Flush reveal: The countertop edge is in line, flush with the sink bowl.

World Stone’s proper measurement and precise fabrication ensure a seamless and aesthetically pleasing integration of the sink with the stone countertop.

Handling Massive Materials
Countertop slabs are huge and heavy—on average, a full slab is 55–70 square feet and weighs around 20 pounds per square foot. That means a single slab can weigh over 1,100 pounds!

In the shop, we use overhead cranes and vacuum lifters to move slabs safely and precisely from inventory to fabrication stations. These tools protect both our team and the material, ensuring each piece stays intact through every step of the process.

Precision Equipment
We use state-of-the-art digital templating and CNC machinery to ensure every cut is accurate down to the millimeter. This means better fitting, fewer installation issues, and a smoother process from start to finish.

Skilled Craftsmanship
Machines can’t do everything. Our team of experienced fabricators hand-finish each countertop, paying close attention to edges, seams, and details like miter joints or specialty cutouts.

Quality Control
Before any piece leaves the shop, it goes through a multi-point inspection—so your countertop is perfect when it arrives at your home.

Want to see the process for yourself? Contact us to schedule a behind-the-scenes visit in our Sanford NC, Charlotte NC, or Sumter SC locations. We love showing off what we do!

Note: Nobody under the age of 18 years old is permitted on the shop floor.

What Measurements Are Needed for Countertops?

Stone countertops are custom-made and fabricated to exact specifications. Capturing accurate measurements from the start is very important.

Stone countertops are custom-made and fabricated to exact specifications. Since the stone is cut precisely and cannot be reshaped afterward, capturing accurate measurements from the start is very important. Our team uses advanced laser templating systems to record every detail with precision, ensuring a perfect fit for your new countertops.

While our team handles the entire measuring process, here are some key dimensions that are typically gathered to ensure accuracy and efficiency:

Countertop Length and Width

This refers to the total dimensions of each countertop section.

  • Kitchen base cabinets are typically 24" deep

  • Vanity cabinets are usually 21" deep

  • Custom layouts like islands or peninsulas are fully measured and verified

  • Countertop thickness and countertop edge profiles are also taken into account

Overhangs

Overhangs extend the countertop beyond the cabinet edge, often for seating or aesthetics.

  • Standard overhangs are about 1½"

  • Extended overhangs (10–12") require additional support such as hidden brackets or wooden corbels

Corner Radius

Corner radius refers to how rounded or square each corner will be.

  • Standard radius is 1"

  • Custom radius sizes are available on request

Backsplash Height and Layout

Backsplashes are vertical stone sections installed along the wall.

  • Standard height is 4"

  • Full-height or custom designs are measured based on your preferences

  • Factors like window frames and wall transitions are noted

Sink Cutouts and Faucet Placement

Accurate measurements ensure sinks and plumbing accessories align properly.

  • Includes undermount, drop-in, or farmhouse sinks

  • Sink setback is usually about 4½" from the cabinet front

  • Faucet spreads vary (single-hole, 4", 8")

  • Additional features like soap dispensers or air switches are measured

  • Sink centerlines mark the middle of the sink in relation to the cabinet layout and countertop edges

  • Sink reveal is typically negative or flush:

    • Positive Reveal: some of the top of the sink is visible

    • Negative Reveal: the countertop has some overhang over the sink bowl

    • Flush Reveal: the countertop edge is in line, flush with the sink bowl

Other Cutouts and Features

Countertops may require additional cutouts. Appliance specs and dimensions should be confirmed prior to templating

  • Cooktops

  • Electrical outlets and switches, especially for backsplashes, islands, or waterfall panels

  • Power cord holes for desks or workspaces

  • Trash or recycling bin cutouts

Additional Considerations

Other important factors are checked to ensure smooth installation and fit.

  • Final model numbers for sinks, ranges, and cooktops should be confirmed

  • Overhangs and apron sinks may require additional support

  • Cabinets and walls should be level and ready for installation

Our professional templating process captures all these dimensions to help ensure your countertops are fabricated and installed to fit exactly as planned.

Care and Maintenance: Quartz vs. Granite vs. Marble Countertops

Here's a quick guide on how to clean and maintain quartz, granite, and marble countertops:

Stone countertops are a beautiful and durable investment, but they each require slightly different care to keep them looking their best. Here's a quick guide on how to clean and maintain quartz, granite, and marble countertops:

How do I clean my stone countertops?

Quartz Quartz is non-porous and low-maintenance. For daily cleaning, use a mild soap or a pH-balanced cleaner with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals like bleach or oven cleaners, which can damage the surface. Quartz doesn't require sealing, but it's still a good idea to wipe up spills quickly to prevent staining from things like wine or coffee.

Granite Granite is very durable but porous, so it does require sealing to prevent stains. Use a granite-safe cleaner or mild dish soap with water for daily cleaning. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners. It's recommended to reseal granite once a year (or as needed—see below details). Always blot spills, especially oils, wine, and citrus, to avoid etching or staining.

Marble Marble is the most delicate of the three. It's highly porous and prone to etching from acidic substances like vinegar, lemon juice, and tomato sauce. Use a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid anything abrasive. Resealing marble regularly is essential to protect it from stains, and you should wipe up spills immediately to avoid permanent damage.

No matter the material, using cutting boards, coasters, and trivets will help protect your counters and extend their lifespan. A little daily care goes a long way!

Do I Need to Seal My Countertops?

Sealing your countertops helps protect them from stains, etching, and bacteria by filling in their natural pores. But not all stone needs to be sealed. Here's a breakdown:

Quartz Quartz countertops do not need to be sealed. They’re engineered with resins that make them non-porous, so liquids and bacteria can’t penetrate the surface.

Granite Granite is porous and should be sealed to maintain its resistance to stains and moisture. Most granite is sealed before installation, but it’s a good idea to reseal it about once a year. A simple water test (see below) will help you know when it’s time.

Marble Marble absolutely needs to be sealed—and often. Its porosity makes it prone to staining and etching, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Depending on use and the specific type of marble, sealing may be needed every 3 to 6 months.

How to Test If Your Countertops Need Sealing Place a few drops of water on the surface and wait 10–15 minutes. If the water darkens the stone or gets absorbed, it’s time to reseal.

Using the right sealers and maintaining a routine will keep your stone looking beautiful and protected for years to come.

Stone Thickness

Stone countertops come in a variety of thicknesses, to suit specific uses and budgets.

Stone countertops come in a variety of thicknesses, to suit specific uses and budgets.

3CM is the standard and most widely available thickness for all stone types, offering maximum durability and a traditional look.

2CM, 1.5CM, and 1.2CM quartz has a sleek, modern look.

Natural stones like granite, marble, and quartzite are not commonly found in the thinner sizes—most are only offered in 3CM, with only a few exceptions available in 2CM.

Edge Profiles

Edge profiles on stone countertops refer to the shape and finish of the countertop’s edges. They not only affect the overall look but also add a touch of style and personality to your kitchen or bathroom.

Edge profiles on stone countertops refer to the shape and finish of the countertop’s edges. They not only affect the overall look but also add a touch of style and personality to your kitchen or bathroom.

Standard edge profiles like Straight Edge, Quarter Round, Half Bullnose, and Quarter Bevel offer clean, simple lines that work well in most designs.

Upgraded edge profiles, such as Full Bullnose and Ogee, provide more decorative options for a more elegant or traditional appearance.

Two additional edge profiles are available that increase the edge thickness by using more material. Mitered edges are another option, where the countertop edge is cut at an angle and joined with another piece for a thick, modern appearance. Laminate edges—created by stacking two pieces of stone—make the edge appear thicker and more substantial.

Countertop aprons are vertical sections of stone or other material that drop down from the edge of the countertop, typically to cover the front face of a cabinet or support structure. They add a finished look and can help hide structural elements like supports or framing underneath. We offer a mitered edge apron and a stacked edge apron (laminated edge style).

Not all edge options are available with all stone types or stone thicknesses. Please check with your World Stone representative on edge profile availability.
